The Best Scholarships for Nursing

Nursing is a great field to get into if you’re looking for a job that is not only rewarding but also constantly in-demand. Nursing is a very stable career choice, but with the cost of tuition rising on a yearly basis, many people are foregoing their dream to go into a field with a less expensive cost of schooling. Fortunately, there are a number of scholarships available to potential nurses, particularly ones who achieved high marks academically.

F.A. Davis Nursing Scholarship

The F.A. Davis Nursing Scholarship is an annual scholarship opportunity that is available to students interested in attending the University of South Alabama. The program was created to show the school’s commitment to educating nurses while recommending how challenging the career path can be. Each year, $1,500 will be awarded per scholarship.

National Student Nurses’ Association

The National Student Nurses’ Association has a long-standing tradition of assisting students who are enrolled in nursing programs all across the United States. Dating all the way back to 1952, the organization offers mentoring and ongoing assistance from the classroom all the way to helping nursing students with job placement assistance. Every year, their general scholarships award more than $330,000 to nursing students.

Army ROTC Nurse Training and Scholarship Program

By becoming an Army ROTC cadet, you can open the doors to a world of possibilities. Cadets who want to study nursing are eligible for two, three, or four-year degree scholarships. In order to be eligible for the program, you must be a United States citizen between the ages of 17 and 26, meet strict physical standards, score a minimum of 920 on your SAT, and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

The Army does require you to serve full-time in the Army for a period of four years, but they do give selected cadets the option to pursue their nursing degree while serving in the Army Reserves or the Army National Guard.

AfterCollege/AACN $10,000 Scholarship Fund

The AfterCollege/AACM $10,000 Scholarship Fund is for students who are looking to obtain a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in a nursing field. While this scholarship fund is open to anyone who fits the above criteria, they do give special consideration to students who are attending a graduate program with the intention of being a nurse educator or those who are enrolled in accelerated nursing programs. The scholarship fund awards $2,500 per scholarship to students four times per year.

At any given time, there are hundreds of scholarships available to potential nursing students as well as those who are already enrolled in a nursing program. If you are a high school student, consider making an appointment with your guidance counselor, who likely has information on a number of available scholarships. Alternatively, you may contact the college you will be attending as many have connections to scholarships that are only available at that particular school.

Finally, Johnson & Johnson runs a website called DiscoverNursing.com. This website outlines all publicly available nursing scholarships and lists them for easy reference.
